ジケトンの一つで2.4−ペンタンジオンとも呼ばれます。
無色、可燃性の液体。ケト形とエノール形の2種類の互変異性体の平衡混合物として存在することで有名です。
水及び種々の有機溶媒に溶ける。種々の金属イオンとキレート化合物を生成しこれらのキレート化合物は有機溶剤に溶けるので、キレート化剤や金属溶剤抽出試薬として用いられます。
このほかに、アセチルセルロースの溶剤、ガソリンや潤滑油の塩化物としての用途をもちます。

For synthesizing heterocycles (isoxazoles, pyrazoles, pyrimidines, pyridines
etc.)
For preparation of metal acetylacetonates as catalysts
Its peroxide is used as radical initiator for polymerisations
Intermediate for drugs (e.g. Sulfamethazine, Nicarbazine)
Synthesis of vitamin B6 and vitamin K
Intermediate for pesticides (e.g. Fungicides, sulfonylurea-herbicides)
